Students in literature classes, or who have to analyze a story, poem, or play, are engaging in literature research. This means finding literary criticism about the specific stories, poems, and plays, and about themes and motifs by writers and authors.
CPCC has special literature databases that can be found at https://researchguides.cpcc.edu/literature
Students using Gale Literature Resource Center should watch the video tutorial first.
Common Assignment: Analyze a story, poem, or play using 2-3 sources of literary criticism, also called scholarly articles or peer-reviewed articles.
Sometimes, instructors will suggest using books of literary criticism. Please note that many of these books have been digitized by Gale and uploaded to Gale Literature Resource Center already.
While this assignment is most often used in ENG 231/232 and ENG 113, occasionally students in ENG 111 and ENG 112 are asked to analyze stories, poems, or plays.
